FAQs

I’ve never done Pilates before, what can I expect in my first session?

To have fun!

Well Engineered Pilates sessions are relaxed and informal. To begin, we will go over any health issues or wellness goals you may have, that might influence the session. Then we will go over some fundamental Pilates exercises before introducing you to work on the mat, reformer, tower and chair.

My motto is ‘Your Body. Your Pilates’, which means no two sessions will be the same; I will tailor each one to work with where your body and mind are at, at that moment – meaning greater physical and mental rewards and successes.

I have back pain / injuries / health issues, can I still practice Pilates?

You can. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise and is well known for its ability to help manage conditions, including back pain, rheumatoid arthritis and hypermobility.

Please mention any injuries, health issues or medications when booking.

Pilates can also be practiced during and after pregnancy – let me know when booking and appropriate modifications can be made.

What should I wear for my Pilates session?

Comfortable clothing that you can move in but nothing too baggy – think leggings or lycra shorts plus a T-shirt or vest. Barefoot or grippy Toesocks. If joining an outside class, dress for the weather – sunscreen and a hat on sunny days; layers if it’s cool.

Do I need my own mat?

No, all equipment is provided – and thoroughly cleaned between sessions. However, if you would prefer to use your own equipment, that is fine, too. Slightly thicker mats (min 1.5 cm) are more suitable for Pilates matwork.

What’s the difference between Yoga and Pilates?

Read this article I wrote for Women’s Health answering the popular question of Yoga vs Pilates.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates involves working out against resistance. This is provided in the form of a ‘moving mat’ attached to weighted springs. Visit my Instagram page – @engineeredwell – to see the reformer (and other Pilates equipment), in action.

Will Classical Pilates help me to lose weight?

Classical Pilates is a fantastic form of body conditioning and, if weight loss is your goal, it is advised to practice Pilates alongside a more cardio-based activity.

Is Classical Pilates suitable for men?

Absolutely. It was created by a man, after all. Joseph Pilates practiced his method until his death, aged 83. Plus, if you’re a runner, Pilates can help you run better.

Covid-19

Please respect Covid-19 guidelines in place within the studio.

Hand sanitiser is provided – please use this when entering the studio and before using the equipment.

Please respect your fellow class mates and adhere to social distancing by maintaining a minimum 1m distance when inside the studio.

Masks are not required in sports settings. However, if you require me to wear a mask whilst teaching, please let me know, in advance.

When using equipment such as the reformer, it is required to purchase your own set of hand/foot loops. I have these available to buy for £25/pair.

My mat material is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal but all mats and equipment are also thoroughly double cleaned between sessions. However, if you would prefer to bring a towel or your own mat to lie on, that is absolutely fine.

Finally, and most importantly, if you, or anyone within your contact, is experiencing symptoms of coronavirus, please stay at home and do not attend your session.
