“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence…”
Words spoken by Joseph Pilates and words that instructors of Classical Pilates adhere to, today.
Because of this, Classical Pilates is the truest form of Pilates. It follows the same exercises, plus the same carefully formulated order of exercises, created by Joseph Pilates, using the Mat, Reformer, Tower and Chair, among other pieces of equipment. The closer your instructor is to Joseph Pilates in their training (noted by their ‘generation’), the more authentic they are likely to be to the source.
Which matters, why?
Well, Classical Pilates works.
- When Joseph Pilates taught at internment camps during WWI, those practicing Pilates were the only ones to strengthen and remain unaffected by an influenza outbreak.
- For almost 100 years, Classical Pilates has been used by dancers to improve posture and body control, and to eliminate asymmetries.
- In American research, Pilates has been shown to induce relaxation, mood improvements and stress reduction.
What can you expect from Classical Pilates?
“Concentrate on the correct movement each time you exercise, lest you do them improperly and thus lose all vital benefits.” Joseph Pilates
